How to Tell Your DS Model

11/4/13

You need to know the correct model of DS for ordering the correct repair parts or repair service. Identifying the kind of DS handheld system you have is easy when you know what to look for. Use our easy identification guide below to determine your system model. Remember, when in doubt turn the system over and check the label (yes it's really that simple):

Original Nintendo DS (the oldest model)

This version is thicker and less rectangular than the other models. If you are still in doubt, here are some other ways to identify a Nintendo DS:

Is the power button rectangular, on the inside, located to the upper left of the lower screen and above the D-pad? It is a DS.

Does it have a game slot for GBA games on the bottom of the lower half as well as a game slot on the back of the hinge side for DS games, but no camera, and is the power light green when it is working? If so, it is either a DS or a DS Lite.
Nintendo DS Lite

This version is more rectangular and flatter than the Original DS, but does not have a camera like the later models. Also the DS Lite measurements are 5 ¼” x 2 7/8”. If you are still in doubt here are some other ways to identify a Nintendo DS Lite:

Does it have a game slot for GBA games on the bottom of the lower half as well as a game slot on the back of the hinge side for DS games, but no camera, and is the power light green when it is working? If so, it is either a DS or a DS Lite.

Is the power slider switch on the outside, on the right hand side? It is a DS Lite.

Nintendo DSi

This is the first version with a camera; the lens can be seen on the front of the DSi handheld system. Otherwise, this version is very much like the Nintendo DS Lite. Also the DSi measurements are 5 ¼” x 2 7/8". If you are still in doubt here are some other ways to identify a Nintendo DSi:

If it has a camera but only one game slot for DS games, located on the back of the hinge side, and a blue power light (when it is working) then it is either a DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, or 3DS XL.

Does it have a slider switch on the upper half, right side, for 3D function? If not, it is a DSi or DSi XL. Also, the power button on DSi and DSi XL is to the lower left of the

lower screen., and the one camera hole is on the lower right of the top. There is no light gray round rubber pad above the Dpad, to the left of the lower screen.

Look at the speaker holes on either side of the upper screen. Are they two narrow little linear slits? If so, it is a DSi.4

Nintendo DSi XL

This system is exactly like the Nintendo DSi, only slightly larger (see the image for a comparison). The DSi XL measurements are 6 ¼” x 3 ½. If you are still in doubt here are some other ways to identify a Nintendo DSi XL:

If it has a camera but only one game slot for DS games, located on the back of the hinge side, and a blue power light (when it is working) then it is either a DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, or 3DS XL.

Does it have a slider switch on the upper half, right side, for 3D function? If not, it is a DSi or DSi XL. Also, the power button on DSi and DSi XL is to the lower left of the lower screen., and the one camera hole is on the lower right of the top. There is no light gray round rubber pad above the Dpad, to the left of the lower screen.

Or, are the speaker holes on either side of the upper screen 7 little holes arranged sort of like a snowflake? If so, it is a DSi XL.

Another way to distinguish these two—Dsi shell is all the same color, top, insides, bottom. DSi XL top shell is a different color or shine from the insides and bottom.

Nintendo 3DS

The 3DS has two camera holes on the top of the case, whereas the DSi and DSi XL only have one. The measurements of the 3DS are 5 ¼ " x 2 7/8”. If you are still in doubt here are some other ways to identify a Nintendo 3DS:

If it has a 3D slider switch on the upper right side, it is either a 3DS or 3DS XL. Also, the 3DS and 3DS XL power buttons are to the lower right of the lower screen, there are two camera holes on the center bottom of the top, and there is a light gray round rubber pad above the D-pad to the left of the lower screen.

Is the stylus pen hole on the hinge side between the game slot and L shoulder button, and there is no black stripe on the shell near the hinge area? It is a 3DS.

 Nintendo 3DS XL

This is the newest model of Nintendo DS, and is exactly the same as the 3DS, only slightly larger. The 3DS XL measurements are 6” x 3 ½.
